Extend Learning with Chrome Apps & Extensions
Level:  Intermediate/Advanced.  

Beyond the core applications in Google Drive, there are literally hundreds of Chrome Apps, Drive Add Ons, and Chrome Extensions that can enhance the learning experience. We will be looking at some examples - starting with add-ons for Google Docs that can enhance writing/research projects/grading, to tools that can be used to curate content (Diigo - social bookmarking app, Flipboard - create your own magazines and share them with your students), and visual communication tools (Piktochart - make your own infographics, Lucidchart - make lots of different diagrams) - to name just a few. We will cover a wide range of tools and 3rd party apps. We will also have hands-on activities like creating our own online magazine for out students, making our infographics and diagrams.

Mystery hangout and its impact on student engagement.
This session is ideal for teachers who are new to using Google hangouts. It will be especially useful to those teachers who would like to open the doors of their classroom and try something new. Angela Etheredge and I will talk about our experience of running mystery hangouts in the classroom and we will demonstrate the impact it had on student engagement. During our session we will 'hangout' with Stony Evans, Library Media Specialist at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, Arkansas in order to show how easy it is to connect with others across the world. He will talk about our collaboration through Google Hangout and the impact that it has had on his students.

We will explore a variety of add-ons and extensions for Chrome and Google Drive that can greatly improve our productivity. Do you find yourself in the need of sending mass personalized emails? Do you or your students often get distracted while you use your computers? Are you trying to reach the elusive Inbox 0 stage? Do you find your computer running too slow because of having too many tabs opened at the same time? Video projects help students plan, organise, collaborate, communicate, analyze. The creation process becomes even more meaningful when students can collaborate in real time. The GAFE platform allows this. Using WeVideo, Screencasting Chrome Apps and Google Draw, students can easily create videos. WeVideo is an intuitive cloud-based video editor. Screencasting apps can be used to screencast your desktop or record voice layovers. Using Google Drawings, you can create simple diagrams to be included in your videos.All of these products are seamlessly connected to Google Drive. Google Drive offers us access to a range of tools that can be put to good use for Project Based Learning. Be it research projects, collecting and handling data, visual representations and drawing, mapping - you can do practically anything with the right combination of Drive apps. Furthermore, adding add-ons and extensions on top, you can further increase the functionalities. During this session, we will explore some ideas of how to use them for student projects. Hands-on activities will include collaborative research projects in Google Slides and creating diagrams (mind maps, Venn diagrams, timelines) in Google Drawings.
